Spinyback - Save the Dinosaur
The Tuatara (or “Spinyback”) is not a lizard, but is classified as a Sphenodontida. In otherwords, it’s the last living dinosaur. It became extinct elsewhere in the world 60 million years ago, and is found only in New Zealand, although sightings are becoming increasingly rare .
In their “Save the Tuatara” Campaign, Waimea Estates is assisting Ngati Koata (“Narti Ko Arta” Nelson’s local Maori Tribe) in their efforts to protect this vulnerable and unique species. Ngati Koata are the "guardians" of Stephen's Island, an island off the coast of Nelson that is a dedicated Tuatara sanctuary.
