Lawson's - Dry Hills and Dry Wines
Ross and Barbara Lawson founded Lawson's Dry Hills in 1992, when they decided to make wine themselves rather than selling the grapes that they had been growing since 1980. The winery’s name was inspired by the beautiful brown hills that extend to the southern portions of Wairau Valley, called the Wither Hills.
Their first vintage, which included Gewürztraminer off their own vineyard, was very small (managed by Ross from an old tin shed at the back of the property) but served to garner recognition for the Lawson’s. Their Gewürztraminer has gone on to be recognized as one of the country's finest and has established Lawson's Dry Hills’ reputation as an excellent producer. They now produce Pinot Noir, as well.
Notably, this was the first winery in the world to put their entire range of wines in bottles sealed with screw caps.
